The Mental Health Service of Remera-Rukoma District Hospital is dedicated to promoting mental wellbeing through the prevention, early identification, diagnosis, and treatment of mental health conditions. The department delivers comprehensive, patient-centered care through mental health assessment, counseling, treatment, rehabilitation, and continuous follow-up. By providing holistic and compassionate services, it supports individuals and their families throughout their journey toward recovery, resilience, and an improved quality of life.Our key services:

1. Mental Health Assessment and Diagnosis

  • Assess individuals presenting with emotional, psychological, or behavioral concerns.
  • Diagnose mental health disorders using comprehensive clinical evaluations and appropriate screening tools. 

2. Treatment and Medication Management

  • Prescribe, administer, and monitor psychiatric medications.
  • Develop individualized treatment and care plans tailored to each patient's needs.
  • Monitor treatment outcomes and adjust therapies as appropriate. 

3. Psychological Counseling and Psychotherapy

  • Provide individual, family, and group counseling services.
  • Offer evidence-based psychotherapy to help patients manage emotional, psychological, and behavioral challenges.
  • Promote coping skills, resilience, and emotional wellbeing. 

4. Management of Mental Health Disorders

Provide diagnosis, treatment, and ongoing management of a wide range of mental health conditions, including:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety disorders
  • Bipolar disorder
  • Schizophrenia
  • Psychosis
  • Substance use disorders
  • Stress-related disorders
  • Epilepsy
  • Suicidal thoughts and behaviors
  • Other psychiatric disorders  

5. Crisis Intervention and Emergency Mental Health Care

  • Assess and manage psychiatric emergencies, including suicidal behavior, aggressive behavior, and acute psychosis.
  • Stabilize patients experiencing mental health crises.
  • Coordinate referrals to specialized mental health facilities whenever advanced care is required. 

6. Patient and Family Education

  • Educate patients and caregivers about mental health conditions, treatment options, medication adherence, and relapse prevention.
  • Promote mental health awareness and encourage early help-seeking.
  • Reduce stigma associated with mental illness through education and community engagement. 

7. Rehabilitation and Recovery Support

  • Support patients in regaining independence and improving daily functioning.
  • Provide psychosocial rehabilitation services.
  • Facilitate social reintegration and vocational rehabilitation whenever appropriate. 

8. Community Mental Health Services

  • Conduct community mental health awareness and health promotion activities.
  • Participate in community outreach, mental health screening, and follow-up programs.
  • Conduct home visits for patients who have discontinued treatment or missed scheduled follow-up appointments to encourage continuity of care. 

9. Referral and Multidisciplinary Collaboration

  • Work closely with other hospital departments to ensure comprehensive, integrated patient care.
  • Refer patients requiring specialized psychiatric evaluation or advanced treatment to higher-level healthcare facilities when necessary. 

10. Follow-up and Continuity of Care

  • Monitor patients' progress through regular follow-up consultations.
  • Review and adjust treatment plans based on patients' clinical progress.
  • Promote long-term recovery, prevent relapse, and support sustained mental wellbeing.
