The Mortuary Service of Remera-Rukoma District Hospital plays an essential role in providing dignified, respectful, and secure care for deceased patients and other deceased bodies while supporting families and ensuring compliance with legal, ethical, and public health standards. The service facilitates the proper handling, preservation, identification, documentation, and release of bodies in coordination with clinical departments, law enforcement, and funeral service providers.Its key functions include:

  1. Reception of deceased patients and other deceased bodies
    Receive and properly register the bodies of deceased patients from hospital wards, emergency units, or other authorized locations.
  2. Body Identification and Documentation
    Ensure accurate identification, labeling, and record-keeping to maintain patient identity and prevent errors.
  3. Body Preservation
    Store bodies in refrigerated facilities to preserve them until release, transfer, or burial arrangements are completed.
  4. Safe and Respectful Handling
    Handle all deceased individuals with dignity, respect, and in accordance with cultural, religious, and ethical considerations.
  5. Support for Postmortem (Autopsy) Services and nursing care for deceased bodies.
    Assist in preparing and transferring bodies for authorized postmortem examinations when required.
  6. Release of Bodies to Families or Funeral Service Providers
    Verify documentation and legally release bodies to authorized family members or licensed funeral service providers.
  7. Infection Prevention and Control
    Apply appropriate infection prevention measures and safe handling procedures, particularly for bodies with infectious diseases.
  8. Legal and Administrative Compliance
    Maintain accurate records and ensure all procedures comply with hospital policies, national regulations, and legal requirements.
  9. Coordination with Hospital Departments and Authorities
    Work closely with clinical teams, pathology services, police, and other relevant authorities in cases requiring legal investigation or special handling.
  10. Compassionate Family Support
    Provide guidance and information to bereaved families regarding body collection procedures, documentation, and available support services.
